Title: Flack's First Meeting
Author: cghardy
Rating: PG (swearing)
Disclaimer: I don't own CSI New York. I think the guardian is my character, though. I haven't heard of him on the show.
Summary: A 10-22 is not a ghost appearing.
AN: I don't know police codes. The 10-22 part is a small joke.
2nd AN: Again, sorry, but the cut isn't working for me. It works for everyone else except me. I don't know why.

They say the first one you should see is your guardian. The one that's going to help you out for the remaining years. Who you get depends on your situation. The Powers That Be (or PTBs as they're referred to by both sides) analyze a situation just like a detective would. They take into account relations, where the person works, stuff like that.

Take for instance Don Flack Jr. Father is part of the NYPD. So the PTBs thought it would be best for Don to have an officer as a guardian. His guardian should have picked a better time to tell him.

Exams were the hardest part. It didn't matter if you were good at taking them or not. All the stress of studying for them made their ulcers look like the Grand Canyons of a person's body. And stress was the one thing on Don Flack's mind. He was at the end of his study at the police academy. Exams were next week but Don hadn't studied at all that month, so he was catching up with a subject a night.

"Okay, 10-22, 10-22 is is..." he muttered, looking through the well thumbed paperback with all the codes needed for patrol.

"Pedestrian hit by a car. I thought by now you would have been taking the detective's exam like your father at this age," a voice interrupted. Flack jumped at the voice and turned from the bed he was sitting on to the door frame. A man around fifty stood leaning, dressed in a pair of jeans and a Knicks T-shirt.

"Man, what the hell?" Flack muttered, closing his eyes and shaking his head. "I've been awake for too long."

"That's how you wanna talk to your dad's old partner?"

He tried blinking. That didn't work. "Ave? Avery Hart?"

"Now you're coming to your senses kid."

Flack shook his head. Nope, not working. "Now I know I've been awake too long." He turns back to Ave. "You died of a heart attack during the NYPD/FDNY baseball game a couple of years back."

"Yeah, I remember that. We were down by five; then they rescheduled after I collapsed. Didn't we win the rescheduled part?"

"Yeah, FD had to pull out some of it's players because of a fire in the business district of Queens."

"I had to leave after the fifth inning. PTBs called me out."

"PTB's. What is that, Peanut Tree Believers?"

Ave laughed. "No, no, although there are a few jokes about the acronym. It's the Powers That Be. They're the ones that deal with the supernatural stuff that God and Jesus Christ doesn't want to deal with."

"And?"

"And that's where I come in. For some reason, you're able to see ghosts."

"For some reason? There isn't an actual reason?"

"There is; we haven't been able to figure it out."

"So you're speaking for the PTBs?"

"As far as I know, they haven't figured it out. But then they don't tell me anything."

This is getting too crazy. "Fine, what happened during the Bastella Robbery back in '78?" Hah, prove that. Dad and Ave were the only ones that saw the customer killing the owner while everyone else saw her as the victim.

"Customer was a plant on the inside and killed the owner to help her partner with the goods. Interrogating me, now?"

Damn. "Okay, okay, so you're Ave. Why are you here?"

"Well, as you can tell, you see ghosts. I'm here as a guide to the spirits around you." Don threw him a look that spilled the disbelief. "I make sure the really bad ones don't touch you. You talk to the good ones by yourself."

"Anything else?"

"Well, if you were involved with more of the supernatural elements of the earth..." Don glared. "Which I'm not saying you are or will be, I would also be the go between to get more information."

"You're not telling me something."

"It's the PTBs. You usually will feel that way." Ave got up from his leaning posture. "I'll let you get back to the studying. Still don't understand why you aren't on detective already." Ave disappeared.

Flack shook his head a couple of times. "A walking, talking dream. Yep, I've been studying too much. Pick it up in the morning."

A full blast shower woke him up quicker than the coffee he drank. A few good minutes cleared up his head and his thoughts. It was a daydream that escaped my head. It was a weird dream; I haven't even thought about Ave in years. He shook the thoughts out and stepped out of the shower. He had a towel around his waist out of habit and cleaned off the mirror. "Ahh!" he yelled, seeing Ave in the mirror.

"It ain't a dream kid."

Flack was pissed. He couldn't bring the idea of a spirit up to his mouth, so he settled on something else. "Do ya mind waiting until I'm dressed before scaring me?"
